Triangle Table

Sometimes, you make the thing to fill a need. And then you lose your mind and you make it much prettier than it needs to be.

We have an odd triangular corner in our house, two chairs on either side, that needed to be filled. I made this triangular table to fill that space, so people on either chair have a place to set down their drinks.

What should have been a simple plywood thing made in a weekend turned into something more elaborate.

I found a piece of flame cherry, and cut it at a bias so the two halves met at an angle to compliment the overall shape. I found African walnut, which has now become my favorite type of walnut, and found a different way to join them together for the legs.

Everything is tapered and angled; I don't think there's more than three parallel surfaces on the whole thing.

The bevel underneath is also tapered to look thicker at the back and thinner at the front.

And because of the different woods, I used two finishes. The top is finished with polyurethane for durability, and the legs are finished with Sam Maloof finish, because I learned the hard way that walnut looks terrible in polyurethane.

Ironically, by the time I was done with the whole thing, my wife had rearranged the chairs, and it's not the right shape for that area anymore. It's still a nice place to set down your drinks, though.
